WHY?
The Welcome Center and Youth Center, started up by Penny and Derek Morgan respectively, are here to help those who are new to the City and those who aren't prepared to live on their own.  Oh, and to help players develop CR.  CR is good.  Each center provides its residents with a bed and three fresh meals a day.

WHERE?
Both Centers are clearly visible from the Fountain.

HOW?
To participate in any way, just post where appropriate to let me know your character is around!  If your character is new or just going through a hard time, you might consider having him or her hide at the Welcome Center.  The Youth Center is a more permanent residence for younger citizens (or those who simply need some extra help).

To let us know that your character is staying at either Center, please drop a note here. To set your character up with a job (or jobs!), kindly take a look here and leave a comment using the form. (If/when your character finds a new place to live or leaves their job, it'd be awesome if you could come back here and remove your character from the appropriate entries.)

Follow the links and ask a question here if you have one!

If you wandered over here from Penny's last recruitment entry--hello!

If you're here because I whined at you on plurk--hello!

Either way, I just wanted to poke the community and let anyone who's interested know that it's still alive. Also? Don't be afraid to post. Seriously. I'm the only admin right now and it'd be awesome if we could build up some in-game CR by tossing our characters together. That's the point of this community, really: getting our characters to meet new people. (Well. Helping new players adjust to the game via IC interactions is sort of a big deal, too, but.)

Oh! And I'm Veda. Hello. I probably should've started with that. I'm sort of shy, but I don't bite. If you're on plurk, I hang out there as cheatreality and I'm always up for new CR and shenanigans.

So! The links on the sticky post up top or in the profile should take you where you want to go. If you have any questions, feel free to put 'em out there.

• The City's Welcome Center was founded by Penny ([livejournal.com profile] horrible_penny).

• When Penny left, Euphie ([personal profile] deadly_legacy) took the reigns.

• For a short time Sakura ([livejournal.com profile] blessed_ninja) ran a small clinic out of the center. There are still basic medical supplies on hand.

• Penny ([personal profile] anunluckypenny) returned and resumed working at the Welcome Center.

• Euphie left and Penny once again took charge of the Welcome Center.

• Derek Morgan ([personal profile] bloodcakedarmor), founder and overseer of the Youth Recreational Center, exited the City. He left the Youth Center to Penny and Mercy Thompson ([personal profile] coyote_walking).

• Due to their proximity, Penny essentially combined the operations and management of the Welcome Center and Youth Center.

Hello! You've reached the City Welcome Center and the Youth Center. I'm sorry, but there's no one around to take your call right now. Please leave a message and we'll get back to you right away!

[A bulletin board takes up a large portion of one of the front room's walls. Anyone in the City is more than welcome to post information about whatever they please here—social events, job openings, classes, inspirational messages. Just be sure to take it down once your event is done!]

[Money, food, clothes—if you've got it, this non-profit organization will take it! Please make note of all donations here, specifying (or approximating) what and how much was given and who we have to thank. If it's anonymous, just make a note of it!]

And by staff, of course, I mean selfless volunteers who devote their time and energy to keeping the Welcome Center welcoming and the Youth Center... er. Youthful? In the interest of keeping this open, I'd be endlessly appreciative if you would reply to this post using this text box, the making of which stretched my pathetic html skills to the limit. Just fill in the capped areas and away you go!

POSSIBLE JOBS

Management (Welcome Center and Youth Center)
This is a very special position that is open to only one or two highly responsible and morally-upright individuals. Managers keep everything going, fill in when there's not enough help, and make sure those who need help are receiving it and that those who don't aren't simply mooching.

Greeter (Welcome Center)
Just what it says on the box. Characters greet newcomers either in person or over the network, establishing some nice CR and getting the newbie set up with what they need. Good for the friendly, extroverted sorts who don't mind talking to strangers! This is one of the jobs that will involve the most player effort.

Informer (Welcome Center)
Not as cool as it sounds, but a perfect job for people who don't mind explaining the way the City works to new arrivals. Someone has to show them the ropes once the greeters have directed them towards the Center, right? This is the other job that will require some player effort. Not too much, mind, but a bit.

General Volunteer (Welcome Center or Youth Center)
An inside job that basically involves doing whatever needs to be done. Tasks might range from doing menial household chores like dishes and making beds to handing out towels to arrivals who were dropped into the fountain to entertaining the kids in the Youth Center. Better for the shy types.

Teacher (Youth Center)
Lessons aren't just for children! Volunteers may utilize one of the Youth Center's classrooms and hold open classes for anyone in the City who cares to learn. Self-defense? Basic cooking? Magic? Anything goes! (For the sake of keeping a schedule of sorts, please make up a time for your character's classes to be held.)

Liason
There are other charitable organizations, potential donors, and business owners who might need new staff members out there! Liasons get to do the networking. Find out where the jobs are, get some money coming in, and figure out who else out there needs help.

This list is composed entirely of suggestions! Characters with special skills—a way with technology, cooking magic, construction, etc.—can always volunteer to do something else. Teach a class! Make awesome knitwear for the newly arrived! All help and all levels of involvement are welcome.

BUT WHAT DO MY CHARACTERS GET OUT OF IT?
A job! A chance to meet people! Oh, and money. Yes, the Centers are looking for paid volunteers. Salaries will depend largely on how well the Centers are doing financially (hint: they're usually quite well-funded), but assume it's on the lower side unless your character puts in a lot of time.

Business owners! Do you need a few more employees to replace the ones that got eaten during that one curse?

Fellow charities! How about we work out a partnership? You scratch our back, we scratch yours...

Philanthropic citizens! Do you have a valuable skill that will help out your community?

If so, post here! The various centers are looking for partners—businesses to send newbies to, other people to help, people who might be willing to provide certain things like curse-related building repair, catering, and so on for free a reduced cost... not too picky here. What does your business/charity/character gain? The satisfaction and sense of well-being that comes from helping those in need! Oh, and advertisement. In exchange for your partnership, the Welcome Center will shamelessly pimp out your services. Isn't that neat?

Partnerships can be played out IC or, if it becomes necessary, a separate IC post can be made to keep track of things. For now, let's just get a handle on who's helping who.

New arrivals or other City citizens who are having a rough time are more than welcome to stay at either Center (for the time being, the manager is a pushover and doesn't care where people stay as long as they're comfy). Just for the sake of knowing who's where, please make a note here if one of your characters is staying at the Welcome Center or Youth Center(and, of course, do try to remember to indicate when they leave, although there's no need to delete the reply).

If you happen to have a character who frequents either Center for whatever reason—free food, good company, a fine selection of free socks—go ahead and make a note of that here, too. That way we all know who ought to know who and we can bask in the joys of easily-accumulated CR! Volunteers do not need to respond here. Their post is here... unless they happen to be boarders, too.

THE WELCOME CENTER

Exterior
The Welcome Center is, essentially, a moderately-sized, two-story office building in Misery Square. Its cheerful blue sign can be seen from the fountain. The front is thoroughly unremarkable—worn brick, a creaky wooden door on the left-hand side, and a picture window on the right. The Center is surrounded on both sides by similar buildings with a good seven feet between them.

Office and Kitchenette
The Center's main room is the first thing one sees upon entering. The carpet is a warm cream color, if a bit worn; the walls are a sky-blue. The front picture window and three smaller windows provide ample natural light during the day and floor lamps illuminate the room with indirect light by night. There is a kitchenette adjacent to the door, separated from the rest of the room by a counter. The kitchenette is tiled and contains a stove/oven, a sink, a small fridge, and a microwave. The fridge is always remarkably well-stocked for how small it is—its contents varying according to the tastes of those staying at the Center—and there are virtually always cookies or other goodies up for grabs on the counter.

Euphie added a small desk with an office chair facing the entrance door. There are typical office supplies accessible to anyone as well as a locked drawer she retains the key to that contains a small amount of official papers including agreements with other businesses, leasing information, bills, etc. Euphie kept this area very tidy, but Penny isn't quite so... ah, organized.

Living Room
To the right of this is what might be considered the living room. Two tables, two sofas, two comfy armchairs, and a number of other chairs fill this area nicely, and a colorful rug covers a large part of the floor. The furniture is all either donated or second-hand and, as a result, none of it matches. While managing the Centers, Euphie replaced some items and furniture with nicer things. She also added a chessboard.) The exact configuration of the furniture varies, as anyone is welcome to move it as they please provided the other rooms aren't obstructed. In spite of the rag-tag furnishings, the front room has a cozy, homey feel to it and is kept clean.

Storage Closet
There is a rather large storage closet directly behind the kitchenette. It serves as a pantry, linen closet, and catch-all storage compartment. This is where nonperishable food items, extra blankets, and racks of clothes (sorted now and not in boxes!) for new arrivals who might find themselves inappropriately dressed can be found. There are also plenty of towels for guests coming from the fountain.

Medical Bay
There wasn't a lot of room for privacy, but the nook beyond the dining room table and before the bathrooms and bedroom can now be partitioned off with curtains. These can also be tied back while no one is there. There is a cabinet with supplies and a cot and stool that are stored in the storage room when not in use. Sakura ran this space. Her healing abilities were based on her ninja powers. There was no surgery or anything extensive in this space, but it can continue to serve anyone coming to the city with basic cuts, bumps, and bruises. Until or unless they have another healer it will be reduced to over-the-counter type supplies anyone can use.

Bathroom
The bathroom is in the far right corner of the Center. Its walls are cream and its simple fixtures—a shower/bath, a toilet, and a sink—are all white. Cheery little paintings of highly abstracted flowers brighten the walls up a bit and a purple bathroom rug warms up the small space.

Bedroom
The final room is the bedroom. This is where City dwellers who, for some reason or another find themselves misplaced, are invited to stay until they can find someplace permanent to live. The three beds are twin-sized; each has a nightstand, and privacy curtains afford guests some amount of privacy. There's a dresser in the room that's open to everyone. The walls are a slightly subdued emerald green (slightly) and three windows provide ample natural lighting.

Misc.
Additional fixtures in the Center include a bulletin board on which everyone in the City is welcome to place ads, events, or offers of employment and two plants in the front room.

THE YOUTH CENTER

Exterior

The Youth Center, conveniently located not so far from the Welcome Center, is far statelier than its partner-center.  It looks more like a house than anything remotely business like with its generous front lawn and a well-maintained basketball court.

Lobby
There is a desk located in the foyer that one sees immediately upon entering the building.  In theory, this desk will be manned by a friendly volunteer who will be more than happy to lead visitors to an available room.

Ground Floor
The first level of the Youth Center features two gaming rooms (both outfitted with the best entertainment donations can buy) that are open to residents and visitors alike, three classrooms, and a lovely kitchen.  Meals will be served in the kitchen three times a day, but don't be afraid to raid the fridge for leftovers!

Bedrooms
There are nine fully-furnished bedrooms on the second floor.  They're relatively simple rooms; some feature bunk beds, others are meant for one occupant alone.  Best of all, these rooms are private.  They are, however, reserved for those who aren't prepared to live on their own and are intended to serve, if needed, as a permanent residence.  Well-adjusted adults will have to make do with the curtain dividers at the Welcome Center.
